Hiked outta Vernon today planning on doing however many miles I could. The shelter spacing was poor to say the least. It was either 17 or 31+. Well of course being the genius I am..."lets go for the 31+!", I said. (Buzzer noise) Wrong choice. The climb outta Vernon was the highlight of the day-->blisteringly hot and up,down,up,down (little ones, but tiring). Ended up camping ~24 miles from town @ 8:30 pm. The bugs are out in force to top everything else.

My name is Cody Zurhellen and I am 23 years old. Last season 3 close friends of mine hiked the Appalachian Trail and initially I had planned to hike with them. However, for a number of reasons I decided to stay home and work. After hiking the New Jersey section with them I knew that I had missed out on a huge opportunity. So I decided on the drive home that I would undertake the trip the following season. Well, here we are...and its time for me to start out.
